Nelson Bait Formulas!
NATURAL FOR COYOTE
This formula is based upon a two quart measure, but it can be made in any amount by decreasing measurements of the ingredients. However, be very sure the same ration of the measurements are used so as to obtain the proper blending, as blending is a very important factor in making a good lure. Just as important as the proper ingredients. The above rule applies to all the formulas given.
In a clean half gallon jar place the ground glands of the bladders from 55 coyotes, and if you wish, add ten or twelve glands from the foot pads from coyote. These glands must be finely ground, and while grinding, add a handful of fat taken from coyote carcasses. Never, Never add parts of the large intestine or the feces as is often suggested. To this mixture add one pint of glycerin and then fill the jar with pure coyote urine. Shake well and allow to age for three months.
NOTE: A natural scent can be made for Wolf, Red and Gray Fox, Bobcat, Lynx or Cougar by following the above formula. You must, of course, use the glands and urine from the animal species you desire to trap. Use 10 to 20 drops of this lure when scenting a set.
Matrix Scents-
Matrix scent is used to call the male of the species being trapped using the glands and bladders taken from the female during the months of January, February, March. The regenerative organs of the female should also be taken and added to the Matrix Scents.
When making up a two quart lot, you may split it into the single quarts after the scent is made. To the one add 1oz Tincture of Asafoetida and 1oz oil of Lovage. This will give you two types of Matrix scents. Use 4 to 7 drops of this lure when scenting a set.
-Sierra Call-
In a quart jar place 3 teaspoons of Canton Musk, 3 teaspoons of ground Beaver Castor, that has been ground with the oil sacs, 6 teaspoons ground Muskrat Musk, 1 1/2 oz Tincture of Asafoetida, 15 drops oil of Rhodium. Almost fill the quart with a mixture of half fish juice and half natural coyote scent. Blend in about 1/4 teaspoon of pure Muscaro, just enough so that the Muscaro slightly over rides the other odors. Mix very well and allow to age for at least four months. Six months is better. Use 4 to 6 drops at a set.
-Super Call-
This is one of my original lures for the Red Fox. It is a fine call and one that I have used for many years. It is also good for the Coyote and attractive to the Coon.
In a clean quart jar place one pint of finely ground mice and 1 1/2 cups of rain water. Allow the Mice to rot down good. Add 4oz ground Muskrat Musk, 2oz ground Beaver Castor, 1/2 oz Tincture of Valerian, 1/2 oz Tincture of Asafoetida and almost fill the jar with pure fish juice. Blend the mixture with a bit of pure Skunk Essence, about 10 to 12 drops. Mix well and allow to age in a warm place for at least a month.
NOTE: Be very careful when milking the essence from the sacs of the skunk to obtain the essence, that you do not allow any of the yellow musk to milk out in the almost empty sac. Use only the pure amber colored essence.
Use one third teaspoon of the above scent when you scent a set.

Nelson Bait Formulas!
Bait:
Any red flesh will do but the best is beaver, horse, woodchuck, skunk, housecat or bobcat. Cut into desired sized pieces, or grind. Place in gallon jar, 2/3 full. Place lid on loosely, just enough to keep flies out. Place in warm but shaded area until bait swells and juice forms on it and it has a frothy look to it. Just a good taint, not rotten. Stir in solution with a long fork. Mix well and when finished, the solution should cover the settled bait mass by about an inch. Bury a foot or so deep in earth trenches, lids on firm but not tight as jars may explode. Age in trench for at least one month.
Solution:
In a gallon jar, place 2 pints sun rendered fish oil (catfish or trout is best), 1 pint of glycerine and 20 heaping tablespoons of sodium benzoate. Add 1 ounce of valerian, 1 ½ ounces of tincture of aseofetida, then 8 tablespoons of ground beaver castor, 20 drops of pure skunk essence, and 1 pint of pure red fox urine. Fill jug the rest of the way with pure rainwater, shake well and age at least one week prior to adding to bait formula. It helps to add 4 ounces of ground muskrat or mink glands.
